VESSELS

Learn: 

  • grasses native to the site
  • gathering and storing water
  • how to develop patterns on baskets
  • traditional Native American, African, and Middle Eastern basket types

Do:

  • gather grass and reeds from the site
  • coil weaving, plait weaving, twine weaving
  • forage (what is there to forage?)
  • test for watertight
  • make soup in a basket with hot rocks
  • feast

SHADE STRUCTURES

Learn:

  • sun paths
  • passive solar design
  • local reed and grass
  • weaving processes

Do:

  • gather grasses
  • weave at three scales: hat, parasol, and shade structure for main building or the workshop

CERAMICS: BAKING, PRESERVING, PRESENTATION

BAKING

Learn:

  • the properties of the earth on the site
  • traditional bread baking forms
  • how to bake in an open fire

Do:

  • make sourdough starter from scratch
  • gather fire wood
  • test the perfect bread baking vessel wall thickness and size
  • make a personal clay dutch oven
  • proof, knead, bake bread
  • maintain fire heat over long period of time

PRESERVING

Learn:

  • the properties of the earth on the site
  • fermenting techniques
  • best pot sizes for fermenting

Do:

  • gather veg from the garden
  • forage for mushrooms?
  • make personal fermenting pots
  • make long fermenting veg
  • make quick pickles
  • sample kimchi style fermenting veg that have been marinating on the site for a while

PRESENTING

Learn:

  • local soil types
  • local flora
  • types of flower containers
  • types of flower arrangements: ikebana, English Garden, Modern Dutch, Modern European


Do:

  • forage for wildflowers, grasses, fruits
  • make clay containers
  • make arrangements for the site
