About Ilan Dei

A vibrant member of our global community, Ilan continually absorbs the cultures and topographies of our sphere.  As a commercial fisherman who worked the Atlantic Ocean, Ilan harnessed the awe-inspiring character of nature as a compass to an apprenticeship with the traditional-master Japanese woodworker, Kai Ito.  In spite of classical foundations, Ilan also embraced dense urbanity and yokes his expertise in digital fabrication tools to realize objects that traverse both worlds.  Today, Ilan's style is a "lush minimalism," which connects modernism's design-clarity to the warmth of rich materials and color palettes.  This practice has led to such honors as the 2006 finalist for the American Society of Furniture Designers Pinnacle Award.  Though Ilan was born in Israel and journeyed through diverse neighborhoods, he calls Venice, California home.
