Coming up on June 19-20th!  This class really draws on our core competencies — you’ll benefit from our 15 years of experience synthesizing traditional craft techniques with cutting edge digital technologies. Using Rhino 3D modeling and CAD/CAM software we will explore the various methods of digital fabrication and how it affects the design process based on those guidelines. We’ve identified  five scenarios that dictate the fabrication process: Slice, Fold, Tile, Skin, and Carve.

This two-day in-depth workshop will cover the various types of digital fabrication and what advantages each process can offer. We will detail the proper setup techniques, both in the field and on the computer, as well as basic software and formatting tutorials. The goal of the workshop is to educate designers and builders on the recent developments in production and craftsmanship, and to bridge the gap between the worlds of design, construction and fabrication. Each digital fabrication method draws its roots from traditional practices of building and making and utilizes computer technology as a tool with tremendous possibilities in those processes.

The evening design & materials classes include Mold Making, Fabric & Form, and a Papercraft workshop. We’ve expanded our digital fabrication workshops to include an evening class on Digital Wood Joints, and we’re reprising our in-depth multi-day training in digital fabrication techniques including Strategies for Digital Design and Digital Fabrication with Furniture Making.  As an authorized Rhino Training center, we’re offering several opportunities to learn this powerful 3D modeling tool, as well as two-day intensive introduction to parametric modeling with the Rhino plugin Grasshopper.  We’re also continuing our free evening salon series with visiting designers, architects, and artists — it’s a perfect way to bring our community together to inspire each other and share ideas.

Over the last 20 years, we’ve learned a thing or two how to turn our design ideas into reality. The 701 pieces were fabricated here at Ilan Dei Studio and are being assembled right now at Cuningham Group’s office in Culver City. We designed and engineered the special joint that allowed this structure to be assembled rapidly and easily. Check out the progress!

Electrifying colors and minimalist stencil graffiti pop this one-eyed panda right off the wall!

Stepping out of the cold and into a “japanese cantina” for a bite to eat, Ilan found these amazing ceramic condiment holders.  Minimalist- and futuristic!

 Continuing his exploration of the city, Ilan found his way to the Metropolitan Museum of Art.  Drawn to the Asian collections, he found much to be inspired about, including this stone fountain.

 Rounding out the trip, Ilan stopped by Oliver Peoples on Madison Avenue to check out our orbs.  Can you see where our influence comes from?  So, we have to ask – what inspires you?

Playing with translucency and opacity, we illuminated the credenza from the inside and wrapped it in a thermoformed solid surface plastic…

To soften the edges further, we engraved an intricate design (inspired by Marie Antoinette!) into the surface with our in-shop CNC machine.
